Sultan Ibrahim Jamek Mosque

The first Muar Jamek Mosque was built in 1887. During the 1920s, a committee was formed to manage the construction of the new Muar Jamek Mosque. Part of the steps taken by the committee is to raise donations from the public. As a result RM10,000 was collected. What follows next was the construction proposal was presented by the committee and brought to the attention of the Sultan.
In 1925, the construction work for the Sultan Ibrahim Jamek Mosque began. 5 years on, in 1930, the mosque was completed. The opening ceremony was conducted by the Johor Chief Minister, Dato’ Mustafa bin Jaafar.
Location : Sultan Ibrahim Jamek Mosque is located at Jalan Petri, Muar, near the Sungai Muar estuary. If driving on the North-South Highway, take the Tangkak exit and drive on through Sungai Mati and Parit Bunga. Muar town is 27 kilometres from the Tangkak exit.

Muar Historic Monuments

There are several historical buildings built late 1800’s and early 1900’s in Muar. This made Muar a focus for architectural enthusiasts. The Customs building located at Jalan Maharani was built in 1909, at the time when Muar town was a port centre and had railway terminals. In the vicinity of the building, there was a row of shop lots built before World War II. A few blocks away from the Customs building is the Muar High Court building, built in 1885. The architectural designs are based on neo-classical designs. Other similarly designed buildings included Sultan Abu Bakar building located at Jalan Petrie. Today, those buildings are converted into Muar District Land Office. Another similarly historic building is the Muar High School, built in 1914.
