Johor!!! Johor!!! Johor!!!

JOHOR BAHARU, Oct 31 -- Johor aims to reduce its dependency on the 75,000 foreign workers currently working in the state by enhancing the skills of locals and using more modern technology in the industrial sector.State Unity, Human Resources, Science and Technology and Innovation Committee chairman, M. Asojan told Bernama here today that the state government also wished to have the total reduction to the minimum level possible by 2013.For a start, he said, the state government would require all public and private training institutes statewide to increase their trainee intake.

Time To Help Strengthen Economy, Not Bicker About Nep, Says Ali Rustam

MUAR, Oct 30 -- All political parties whether from the Barisan Nasional (BN) or the Opposition should be trying their level best to help Malaysia face the current economic crisis and not bicker about the New Economic Policy (NEP), said Umno vice president Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam. The Melaka Chief Minister stressed that they should be finding new ideas to increase economic growth for the benefit of all Malaysians."Disputing the policy (NEP) is not going to benefit anyone, whether Umno, MCA or the MIC," he told reporters when asked to comment on remarks by MCA vice president Datuk Liow Tiong Lai on Monday that his party wanted the 30 per cent bumiputera equity requirement in public listed companies as called for by the NEP to be done away with.Mohd Ali, who was met at Muar Umno chief Datuk Mohd Ismail Mohd Shah's Aidilfitri open house here Tuesday, further described those disputing the NEP as "trying to seek cheap publicity just to pursue their own agendas".

Police Nab Six Men And Two Women In RM1.7 Million Kidnap Case

Johor!!! Johor!!! Johor!!!

JOHOR BAHARU, Oct 30 -- Police have succeeded in apprehending six men and two women involved in a kidnapping case that involved ransom of RM1.7 million early this month.Johor chief police officer, Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff, said the group kidnapped a woman together with her six-year old son here about 11.59am on Oct 6. They were caught in a hotel in Georgetown, Penang at 1.20am two days later."The kidnappers locked up the 42-year old woman and her son at a location here. They were freed on the evening of Oct 7 after the ransom was paid and the gang then fled to Penang," Mohd Mokhtar told reporters at the state police contingent headquarters here today. He said police recovered the money and two pistols at the hotel where the gang was nabbed and that the members were in their early 40s.He said they were remanded for investigation under Section 3 of the Kidnapping Act 1961."We are looking for three more men to help in investigations," he said.On another matter, Mohd Mokhtar said police will suggest to the Johor Baharu City Council to cancel the business licenses of cheap hotels in the city to eradicate prostitution. He said the vice-activities were widespread in the city and that joint operations with the Johor Islamic Department from Oct 13-17 led to 58 foreign women and 69 local women being detained for prostitution in the hotels. "Police efforts are on-going to clean up Johor Baharu from prostitution. We advise the hotel operators to refrain from letting their premises to be used for such activities," he said.

Golf: Goosen Aims To Salvage Season In Malaysia

JOHOR BAHRU: Two-time Major winner Retief Goosen is aiming for victory at the $500,000 Iskandar Johor Open this week to salvage what he called a “bad” season. The South African star headlines the Asian Tour event at Royal Johor Country Club from Thursday and has every intention of snatching the trophy from title holder Artemio Murakami of the Philippines.Former Asian number one Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand, Malaysia’s rising star Ben Leong, Niclas Fasth of Sweden and last week’s Macau Open champion David Gleeson of Australia are also in the field.“I’ve been working pretty hard over the last five months with my fitness and everything. I feel like it’s starting to come together and hopefully I can get on a roll this week,” said Goosen, winner of the US Open in 2001 and 2004. Once a regular fixture in the world’s top-10, ‘the Goose’ has slipped off the radar over the past 12 months but is optimistic of turning his fortunes around.“It’s been pretty bad,” the 47th-ranked Goosen said of his year. “I had a couple of good tournaments but it’s been very inconsistent. My putting has not been up to standard for the past two years and in this game, if you can make putts you’ll make a score.“I’ve been working pretty hard in all parts of my game and hopefully things can improve.” Despite turning 40 in February, Goosen still feels he has plenty to offer.“I’m still a youngster,” he said. “Vijay (Singh) started playing his best golf when he was 40 and I can’t wait till I turn 40 next year. Hopefully it’ll kickstart my game. I know I’ve got another five good years of golf left.” Murakami is relishing a return to the scene of his maiden Asian Tour victory but knows he must be on top of his game to ward off the combined challenges from Goosen and Asia’s best players. “It’s exciting to come back to Johor. However, there are so many top players this week, so it will be a real test for me,” said the big-hitting Filipino, who triumphed by one shot last year.He remembers the victory clearly but the notorious greens at the Royal Johor still bring a shiver to his spine. “The pin positions were very tricky last year. There are many tough pins out there.” Thongchai, a two-time winner of the Malaysian Open, returns to what he calls his second home and while he will be eyeing a ninth career Asian Tour victory, the former Thai soldier is battling jetlag after flying in from Spain on Monday.“I’ll need to adjust again to the conditions here as I’m struggling with jetlag,” said Thongchai. Like Goosen, Thongchai lamented about his putting and knows he needs to hit the right lines in Johor. “In my last two events, I’ve hit like 16 and 17 greens consistently but took an average of 34 putts. It’s not been good,” he said.

Syed Hamid Talks Of Attempt To Split Kota Tinggi Umno Division

KOTA TINGGI, -- Kota Tinggi Umno Division chief Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said certain quarters were attempting to defame him and split the party division by saying that he was a member of two Umno branches. He said was he was a member of the Kampung Sungai Sembilang Umno Branch and this had been verified by the Umno headquarters. He said he was not a member of the Batu 1 Umno Branch."It is slander when people say that I am a member of two branches. This shows that action must be taken against them. They have spread the word nationwide," he told reporters after an Aidilfitri open house of the Kota Tinggi Anti-Drug Agency, here.Yesterday, 60 delegates to the Kota Tinggi Umno Division annual meeting scheduled for Monday send a protest note to the Johor State Umno Liaison Committee alleging that Syed Hamid had resorted to money politics and violated the Umno constitution by holding positions in two Umno branches in the same year, that is last year. They claimed that on July 22 last year, Syed Hamid held the post of Kota Tinggi Umno Division chief by virtue of being a member of the Batu 1 Branch but on Aug 26 of the same year he was elected as branch chief at the inaugural meeting of the Kampung Sungai Sembilang Branch.Syed Hamid said these quarters should abide by the decision of the Umno headquarters instead of hurling accusations which questioned his position as the head of the Kampung Sungai Sembilang Branch."I would not have become branch head if it was illegal. Someone from Marang, Terengganu, asked me why someone from the Kota Tinggi Division had sent him a letter on my status."I checked with the Umno headquarters and found that I am a member of the Kampung Sungai Sembilang Branch," he said.Syed Hamid also said that the Umno headquarters had decided that two members of the division, A. Malik Daeng Rahman and Mohamadon Abu Bakar, who were suspended by the party disciplinary board last month, were ineligible to attend the divisional delegates meeting on Monday.

RM7.1m to widen Sg Plentong

THE Federal government has allocated RM7.1 million for the widening of Sungai Plentong to overcome overflowing during rainy days.
The amount will also include the cost of reconstructing the railway bridge spanning the river.
Transport Minister Datuk Ong Tee Keat said the project will take 16 months to complete and is expected to solve the flood problem that has been affecting villagers for decades.
He said the river will be widened from 18.8 metres to 35 metres while the railway bridge across it will be extended from 44.2m to 60m.
"Six companies have tendered for the project.
"The successful firm will have to resume work immediately after the result of the tender is announced in December.
"Work is expected to be fully completed by early 2010.
"We hope the project will be able to solve the flood problem as we had deliberated over the idea and laid out a comprehensive plan."
He said this after visiting the new basketball court at Kampung Baru Plentong in Johor Baru and the banks of Sungai Plentong on Oct 16.
Also present were Johor International Trade and Industry, Energy, Water, Communication and Environment Committee chairman Tan Kok Hong and Johor Jaya state assemblyman Tan Cher Puk.
Ong said the meandering nature of the river, coupled with the problem of shallow riverbed, was the main cause of the flood problem.
"Immediate action needs to be taken to rectify the situation that had been prolonged for many years and which is getting more serious lately.
"I wish to thank the Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman and the state government for their concern and efforts to attend to the problems."

The construction of the complex received an allocation from the central government and is being built on land owned by the Fisheries Development Authority," he told reporters at an Adilfitri open house at its present headquarters here, Friday. He said besides the new complex in Sedili, MMEA also planned to build several new operations bases and jetties in the Southern Region to facilitate their operations.

Syndicate Prefers Muar Beaches To Smuggle Exotic Animals

JOHOR BAHARU, -- Local wildlife smuggling syndicates with global connections are believed to be using several beaches in Muar to smuggle exotic animals from Indonesia. An officer at the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) said when exotic animals such as pangolins from Indonesia were brought in illegally, they would be taken to secret locations in the country before being re-smuggled to other countries, especially China. The officer said Muar beaches had became popular spots for wildlife smuggling due to the strategic location of Muar town in the Straits of Melaka."The syndicates are now resorting to Indonesia to smuggle exotic animals such as pangolins because of difficulties getting supply locally."Foreign demand for pangolins is very high and its scales can reach up to RM190 per kilogramme," the officer, who insisted anonymity, told Bernama here today. However, the syndicates' activity at Muar's beaches became exposed when 42 pangolins from Indonesia, worth RM60,000 in the black market, were seized by Muar marine police in Parit Jawa waters last week. Two local men were also nabbed. It was the second success of the marine police in just two months after eight men attempting to smuggle 16 exotic animals from Indonesia, were caught the same waters in September. The officer said the modus operandi of the syndicates was to have the 'exchange' done on the maritime border between the two countries in the strait."Exotic animals from Indonesia will be handed over by Indonesian syndicates to their Malaysian counterparts who will be responsible to take the animals to secret locations along the coast," he said. The officer said during a recent spying operation, it was learnt that the landing process was also carefully guarded by the members of the syndicate."We found 10 "tontos" (henchmen) on motorcycles circling the area to safeguard the process which took only 10 minutes," he said, adding that the department was also monitoring 10 other local syndicates which had connections with international exotic animals smugglers.

Change Of Name For Johor In M-league
Pasir Gudang,-- Johor-Pasir Gudang is no more for the new M-League season. The Johor FA have decided to drop the words Pasir Gudang from the team with immediate effect as part of their plan to bring back the glory to Johor football again."Somehow it doesn't sound right to name the team Johor-Pasir Gudang or Johor-PG. After all we are Johor and have a proud tradition in Malaysian football," said Johor FA secretary Wan Nizam Wan Omar. The name Johor-Pasir Gudang was introduced last year after the Johor FA appealed to the parent body, the FA of Malaysia for the inclusion of the additional two words following the withdrawal of Pasir Gudang United from the M-League after winning the FAM Cup competition."At that time we thought since Pasir Gudang United had qualified for the M-League but because of financial contraints which forced the team to pull out, it was only proper that we kept the name alive," added Wan Nizam. And a new look Johor will also also have a new man at the helm - former international Nasir Yusof. His appppintment as coach of the Johor team is seen as a move by the Johor FA to try to bring back the glory days to the southern state after a series of disappointing seasons.Nasir or fondly known as the "Professor" during his playing days, was a member of the Johor 1991 Malaysia Cup winning squad and has had his fair share of coaching experience too. After his retirement from competitive football he took up coaching and was appointed Johor's assistant coach to Khalid Shahdan and Karl Heinz Weigang in the 2003-2004 season before he was picked as the assistant National coach to the Hungarian Bertalan Bicskei in the 2005 season."There is no denying Nasir's coaching experience and I am sure he will bring the right approach is his new role. We admit that the Johor team has not been performing as well we should but hopefully Nasir's touches will bring a change of fortune. His first task is to pick another five players from the one-day open trial at the Larkin stadium here tomorrow to finalise the Johor squad before the real preparation begins.

Ridiculous To Say Umno Is Too Dominant In BN - Shahrir
JOHOR BAHARU, -- The idea that Umno is being too dominant in Barisan Nasional (BN) is ridiculous, says Johor Baharu Umno division chief Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad. He said that if BN component parties thought that Umno was dominant, they must understand why it was so."Is it because the component parties themselves are weak, and what would be the solution to it? he asked, adding that the matter should not be used by the component parties to cover their weaknesses following the last general election results.Shahrir, who is also Domestic Trade and Consumers Affairs Minister, said Umno could not reduce its power for the sake of providing a so-called "level playing field" for the component parties."By doing so, it would lead to BN losing everything to the opposition," he said to reporters after opening the Johor Baharu division Puteri Umno delegates' meeting, here today.Shahrir was asked to comment on former MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting's statement that the people perceived Umno as being too dominant in BN, causing the ineffectiveness of the power sharing concept in the coalition.Shahrir said the perception was created by the opposition parties as part of their efforts to weaken the support, especially among the non-Malays, for BN.The Johor Baharu member of parliament did not rule out communication problems among BN component party leaders and suggested it to be rectified. He reminded the BN component parties to appreciate Umno's strength that had enabled the coalition to form a government at the federal level and that they must use Umno's strength to strengthen themselves. He also concurred with Prime Minister Datuk seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi that Umno was not a bully

Villagers Detained For Obstructing Demolition Of Houses
JOHOR BAHARU, Oct 16 -- Police have arrested 25 Kampung Baru Plentong Tengah residents for obstructing the demolition of houses in the village, today. The villagers, who included Kampung Baru Plentong Tengah Action Committee secretary Taslim Nani, were detained at the Johor Jaya police station, said Hassan Abdul Karim, a lawyer who represented some 2,000 residents told reporters. Some 300 villagers put up a human barricade as four bulldozers made their way into the village at about 8am.Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel broke the barricade afterSeri Alam police chief Supt Roslan Zainuddin issued three warnings to the villagers to disperse. After calm was restored, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Syarikat Air Johor and the Johor state government's Housing Division personnel moved in to demolish 10 houses which had already been vacated at 10.35am."We had asked for the demolition of 291 more houses, which are still occupied, to be held back until an application by the residents to postpone the demolition is heard in the court on Oct 29," he said. The residents, who occupied the land since 20 years ago, had been served notices on Aug 1 to vacate their houses to make way for a development project. However, they reached a consensus with the developer, Bukit Lenang Development Sdn Bhd to postpone the demolition until yesterday. The villagers had accepted the Court of Appeal's ruling to be relocated to Kampung Bukit Dagang, Mukim Sungai Tiram on the condition that basic infrastructures were provided for. However, until today they were not ready as promised.

Iskandar Financial District Exceeds All Expectations At Cityscape Dubai With Potential US$2b In Foreign Investments
Cityscape has closed its doors this year with the Iskandar Financial District (IFD) in Malaysia taking a major portion of the lime light of this event. The success of the IFD launch was highly reflected in the large number of investors visiting the IFD pavilion and expressing their written interest in securing development plots in this unique economic development zone in the southernmost tip of Malaysia, across the strait from Singapore. The IFD project, with an estimated development cost in excess of USD 4.5 billion, was officially launched in Cityscape Dubai. The investment is spearheaded by Global Capital, an investment entity comprising prominent GCC and Malaysian Investors including Mubadala, Aldar, Malaysia Ventures – a subsidiary of Saraya Holdings, United World Infrastructure (UWI), Iskandar Investment Berhad, and Unity Capital. The IFD attracted the interest of local, regional and international investors, as well as financial and development entities visiting Cityscape . The project offers a world class master planned city center targeting financial institutions, banks, corporate headquarters, commercial office buildings, shopping centers, condominiums, serviced apartments, 5-star hotels, conferencing and meeting facilities as well as community service facilities. The IFD will turn Iskandar region in Malaysia into an important Islamic financial center in Southeast Asia. The IFD concept, a vision of the Prime Minister of Malaysia, capitalizes upon the advanced legislative environment that the Malaysian Government has put in place over the past 25 years to position the IFD as the new heart of Islamic finance in south East Asia. The IFD is attractive due to its unique geographical location at the crossroads of trade routes between the East and the West; it is in a region that enjoys easy access to both air and land transportation services to Asia and the world. In addition, being close to Singapore - about 20 minutes by car - and being in the area between China and India whose economies witness a serious rapid growth, makes IFD a desirable location for investment. The IFD developers and development managers, ALDAR and Millennium Development International – a member of Saraya holdings, reported that the project attracted attention because of its unique location, the reputation of the investors in the consortium, the tax incentives offered by the Malaysian Government and the high quality of the master plan design."Malaysia has been chosen by the investors in Global Capital after they conducted intensive financial and economic feasibility studies which revealed that the Iskandar region in Malaysia can provide unparalleled investment opportunities and high growth potential. The unique geographical location of the project as well as the strong governmental support in infrastructure execution and the provision of business incentives will ensure such successes. The results achieved in Cityscape proved that Global Capital's vision for this project was correct" said Oussama Kabbani, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Millennium Development International, the appointed development managers of the project. Mr. Kabbani added that: "The government has already commenced the infrastructure, and they expect to start delivering plots for IFD's investors and developers within the coming 12 to 14 months". Mr. Kabbani concluded by revealing that all the development plots that were released for Cityscape were reserved by developers, and that a waiting list for other plots was established pending Global Capital's Board of Director's approval to release more plots at this stage. "The total land sales requests generated in Cityscape and pending Global Capital's Board of Directors' approval will generate development projects with a value of not less than USD 2 billion, the highest achieved number of foreign investment requests in Cityscape 2008

Iskandar Malaysia May Strike Deal With Theme Park Operator

DUBAI, -- Iskandar Investment Malaysia Bhd (IIB) may announce a deal with at least one theme park operator within 6-12 months to run a theme park in Iskandar Malaysia."We are talking to several theme park operators, not just one," said IIB managing director Alida Ariff at a press conference here Thursday.IIB is in talks with theme park operators from the US, Europe and Australia, said Alida, who is in Dubai for the Cityscape Dubai, which started Monday and ended today. She said Iskandar Malaysia would probably have three theme parks and they would be complementing each other rather than competing."If we sign the deal within the next 12 months, we can open the park in 2012," she said.Alida said Iskandar Malaysia needs more than one theme park to ensure the length of stay of tourists would be at least two days."The Hong Kong Disneyland is an example that shows to us that you cannot just depend on a single theme park."It has to be multiple parks to ensure tourist dollars that we receive is translated into multiplying factor," she said. She pointed out that if there was only one theme park in Iskandar Malaysia, what would happen was that Singaporeans or other tourists whom come from there would spend a day in the theme park and then go back to Singapore where they would spend money for accommodation and shopping.Alida said IIB would be careful in selecting the operators and those chosen would not be offering the same kind of entertainment. She said that in most instances IIB would have the operators to own a small stake in the theme park that they operate. Over 1,200 hectares have been allocated for theme parks and supporting development. The core theme park will take up 240-320 hectares, depending on the selection of operators, while the other theme parks will be about 30 to 40 hectares each.IIB is majority-owned by Khazanah Nasional Bhd.IIB chairman Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar said Iskandar Malaysia enjoyed "good days" at Cityscape which started with the unveiling of "Medini Iskandar Malaysia" on Monday. He said Iskandar Malaysia has managed to attract 300-400 visitors daily during the first three days.At retail level, he said, developers offering their products for sale would receive over RM100 million in paid deposit. He also said the Middle East market has been targeted as one of the key market drivers to help inject interest in Iskandar Malaysia, not just in terms of funds but also expertise.Cityscape Dubai is the world's largest business-to-business international real estate event
