Johor attractions for tourists

Johor!!! Johor!!! Johor!!!

JOHOR is not worried about the stiff competition from its southern neighbour.Singapore may have Universal Studios and Marine Life Park at its Integrated Resorts, but Johor will soon have at least three large attractions to draw visitors to the southern growth region. The Legoland Theme Park will be set up in Iskandar Malaysia, and the other theme parks will offer a wide choice of tourism products, some the first in Asia.State Tourism and Domestic Trade Committee chairman Hoo Seong Chang said: "We are not worried by the competition because Singapore and Johor have different products to offer."Singapore has its theme parks, and we have our own."We are not in direct competition. We complement each other, drawing in tourists from different parts of the world."And visitors will find it cheaper to spend in Malaysia.

Hoo was commenting on feedback from the tourism industry that Legoland Theme Park is not as popular as other theme parks such as Disneyland. And it is targeted at a younger age group.Hoo said the four Legolands in other parts of the world were making money and receiving a constant flow of tourists. He said the theme park catered for a variety of people, and not just children."Moreover, Johor has more than just theme parks. We have islands, national parks, golf courses, historical sites, handicrafts, and others. Collectively, these products will synergise to form different and attractive packages for different types of visitors," he said.On Dec 13, Iskandar Investment Bhd (IIB) and Merlin Entertainments, the world's second largest visitor attraction operator, signed an agreement to build East Asia's first Legoland Theme Park in IM.The RM750 million joint venture, to be located on a 920ha site in the northeast corner of Medini Iskandar Malaysia is expected to open its doors in 2013.Merlin will own a 20 per cent stake and will design and operate the park, while a consortium led by IIB will own the rest.

Heavy Traffic Jam @ CIQ Complex

Johor!!! Johor!!! Johor!!!

JOHOR BAHRU: 17 Dec 08 The first day of operations at the new Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex was marred by massive traffic congestion.
The two-hour-long crawl saw traffic into Johor snaking all the way to Woodlands in Singapore during peak hours due to motorists being caught off guard by the cashless toll collection system at the complex.
Many motorists, especially Singaporeans, did not know that they were required to use Touch ’n Go cards at the new complex in Bukit Cagar.

The congestion did not let up even when Plus officials were stationed at the complex entrance to sell RM20 cards on the spot to motorists.
Counters were also set up at the old checkpoint.
Notices were also placed at Woodlands informing motorist about the traffic congestion at the entrance into Malaysia.

Johor Immigration director Mohd Nasri Ishak said the congestion was due to motorists not having Touch ‘n Go cards and not used to the new road system.
“The jams were mainly during peak hours in the morning and even when people returned from work,” he said.
He said that adequate notices had been put up informing the public about the cashless toll system adding that all 200 counters for in-bound and out-bound were operational on the first day.

Shahrir: Govt not benefitting

JOHOR BAHRU: Although the Government may gain about RM300mil in revenue from petrol sales last month, some of the monies had to be spent on subsidies for diesel and liquid petroleum gas (LPG).
Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Samad said; “You forget that the Government provided subsidies for 10 months, but the moment it gets revenue for one month, whatever we have done in the past 10 months is questioned and not appreciated. That is not fair.”
He was commenting on a report that the Government was enjoying windfall revenue of RM16mil per day from petrol sales due to a fall in global crude oil prices.
Shahrir refuted that figure, saying that such an assumption was based on crude oil priced at the current rate of US$44 (RM160.60) per barrel.
“That is the price today, but that is not the average price. When you calculate, you must use the previous average price, which was about US$58 (RM211.70) per barrel,” he said.
Shahrir also said that it was obvious to most people that it would take about two weeks for the oil to be delivered to refineries.
“Our pricing for petrol is based on the previous average price, so you can’t base it on the price today or future prices,” he said after launching a price reduction campaign at the UO Superstore in Plaza Angsana here yesterday.
Shahrir also pointed out that it was not unusual for governments to collect revenue from petrol sales such as was done in Singapore, Australia and Britain.
He said the last time the Malaysian Govern- ment had revenue from retail sales of petrol was in February 2002.
On how the Government plans to spend the revenue, Shahrir said the money would go into consolidated funds and various trust accounts as in the past.
Meanwhile, Shahrir said the Cabinet would be meeting soon to discuss a possible reduction in the price of diesel.
However, he said, the move had to be seriously considered first as when diesel was reduced to RM1 per litre, it resulted in enforcement difficulties.
“There have already been requests from certain ministries, like the Agriculture Ministry, for the price of diesel to be reviewed,” he said.
Shahrir urged the people not to jump to the conclusion that the price of diesel would definitely be reduced.

Quarry Activities, Silica Sand Dredging In Johor Follow Rules

JOHOR BAHRU, Dec 5 -- Silica sand dredging and quarry operations in Pengerang reported by a newspaper yesterday comply with the stipulated procedure and regulations, the Johor Land and Mineral Office said today. Its director, Obet Tawil, said in a statement that sand dredging activities in Punggai, Pengerang, only involved silica and did not involve river sand and inland sand could not be exported."The extraction sample had been sent to a laboratory and the Mineral and Geoscience Department has confirmed it was silica sand. Therefore, it is allowed for export purposes besides for use domestically," he said.He said silica sand dredging in the area was carried out for the third time since the 1960s and 1980s and the activities had obtained the Environmental Impact Report approval.Obet said the three time silica extraction proved it did not affect the land and its surroundings. He said the Department of Environment, Kota Tinggi Land and Mineral Office and Pengerang Land District Office constantly monitored the activities. On quarry operations in Teluk Ramunia, Pengerang, he said it involved five plots belonging to Perisind Holding, a subsidiary of Johor Islamic Corporation. Two of the plots, he said, were used as processing factory sites while the other three, of which only two were in operations, were used for stone extraction."The lease tenure is 21 years ending 2023," said Obet.He said works using explosives at the quarries were not carried out every day and this year, only 25 explosions were set at the two quarries in the first 10 months.Obet said stones extracted from the quarry operations were allowed for exports if it did not exceed 9 inches in diameter as spelt out by the rules."This means all quarry operations and silica sand dredging are in compliance with all stipulated procedures and regulations," he said.He said the quarry area was for formerly a bauxite mine ran by Promet Fabrication Sdn Bhd until September 2000.Three big craters reported in the area, he said, were formed when it was used as a bauxite mine, and the quarry operations thereafter had nothing to do with them.He said there was no level covering requirement in the mining and quarry works."However, the Land and Mineral Office will summon the operator to cover the area after it is no longer in production," he said.
