JOHOR BAHRU, -- India and Pakistan are headed here for the Under-21 Four Nations hockey international friendly which is expected to serve as a trial run for the Junior World Cup to be co-hosted by Malaysia and Singapore in June. Both the giants of Asian hockey have confirmed their participation alongside Singapore and host Malaysia, at the brand new Taman Daya Hockey stadium here, from March 11-15.
Originally the Four Nations tourney was to have an European team taking part but because of the tight schedule and the proximity of the Junior World Cup which is scheduled for June 7-21, the Europeans had backed out."Singapore, as co-host for the Junior World Cup are very interested and had promised to invite us for their own Four-nation friendly next month," said Johor HA secretary Manjit Abdullah.
According to Manjit, the Taman Daya stadium was 100 per cent ready including the pitch and floodlights."So all the matches during the Four Nations tourney will serve as a trial run to test the facilities for the Junior World Cup. Matches are scheduled to start at 5.30pm and 7.30pm respectively and played under floodlights.
"It will be good for the four teams because at least they will know what the conditions are here. And for us, the matches here will be very useful because it will tell us where the shortcomings are, if there are any," he added.Pakistan, the inaugural champion back in 1979, has been drawn in Group A based here while India who are drawn in Group D would play their matches in Singapore.
Host Malaysia are drawn in Group C and play their group matches here while Singapore host Group D at home.
