Senai,Pasir Gudang and Desaru Highway

Johor!!! Johor!!! Johor!!!

The Senai-Desaru Expressway (SDE) is a new expressway being built in the Johor region of Malaysia. The 77km expressway is being constructed at an estimated cost of RM1.46bn and is intended to link Senai in the west coast of Johor to the industrial town of Pasir Gudang in the south and the coastal resort of Desaru in the east of Johor.
Senai Desaru Expressway Berhad (SDEB) is the concession (operator) holder for the road for the next 33 years. The concession was granted by the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) in 2004 with three years to build.
Construction began in 2005 and the first phase of the road from Senai to Pasir Gudang is expected to be completed by the end of January 2008. The main contractor for the road project is Ranhill Bersekutu Sdn Bhd.
Phase 2 of the project, including the cable-stayed 1,708m-long Sungai Johor bridge across the Johor River, is scheduled to be ready by June 2008. It will be one of the longestsingle (central) plane cable-stayed bridges in Malaysia.
The new road will be a four-lane dual carriageway and will improve access across the region of Johfor, particularly access to Senai International Airport from Kota Tinggi and eastern Johor. The road will feature a closed toll system which over the 30-year concession is expected to pay for both the road and bridge.Maintenance will be undertaken by the concession holder SDEB and Ranhill. The road will start at Senai and link to the following cities: Setia Indah, Taman Daya, Ulu Tiram, Pasir Gudang, Bandar Penawar and finally Desaru. The road will be the major access to Desaru from the North-South Expressway (southern route E2). The road will include five toll plazas and four interchanges.
Construction of the cable-stayed bridge across the Johor River began in 2006; the bridge was first planned in 1996 but the Asian currency crisis put paid to it at the time. The bridge will connect Kong Kong on the western bank to Teluk Sengat in the east. The preliminary and detailed design and engineering work was carried out by COWI Consulting Engineers and Planners AS and Ranhill Consulting Sdn Bhd for Senai Desaru Expressway Berhad (the concession holder). Three Ranhill engineers spent six months in Denmark with COWI designers to develop the design of the bridge.
The construction was undertaken by Ranhill Engineers and Constructors Sdn Bhd, foundations were constructed by Ranhill Antara Koh Sdn Bhd, the steel construction was the remit of Jawala and MBEC. Waiko Engineering Sdn Bhd are construction subcontractors, the stay cables and incremental launching of sections were contracted to VSL International.

Singapore Firm Invest RM2.5 Billion

Johor!!! Johor!!! Johor!!!

Singapore Firms Invest S$1b In Iskandar Johor Malaysia Project.

Singapore-Malaysia ties will remain positive under Malaysia's next premier Najib Tun Razak – that is the view of Malaysia's new High Commissioner to Singapore, Hussin Nayan, who has described current ties as excellent. An important sign is the nearly S$1 billion (RM2.5 billion) worth of projects that Singapore companies have invested in the mega Iskandar Malaysia project in Johor.Mr Hussin said: "Najib is not unfamiliar with Singapore leaders. He knows most of the Cabinet ministers in Singapore. I could assume that whatever changes that will take place would be gradual in nature and very smooth."I would imagine that Malaysian leaders would continue to improve relations with Singapore because Singapore is a very important country for us."That is why Mr Hussin feels it is important not to be distracted by the occasional hiccups."Ups and downs will always be there, just like a family. It depends on how best we resolve these issues. From my own perspective, the best way to resolve all these ups and downs is through common sense and willingness, goodwill and open-mindedness, rather than harping on the negatives all the time."If we harp on the negatives, we will never improve and this has not happened in Singapore-Malaysia relations because leaders from both sides are positive," he added.

Since the Iskandar Malaysia project kicked off in 2005, Singapore companies have been involved in some 220 projects there. But Mr Hussin wants to encourage them to venture to other development programmes in Malaysia."I would encourage Singaporeans to go beyond Iskandar Malaysia. As you know, there are other regional development programmes that are being implemented in other stages. We do not doubt that Singapore investors would come in because Malaysia is not a new area for them," Mr Hussin said.He also assures Singapore businessmen a friendly experience when discussing investment proposals with their Malaysian counterparts.

Issue with Iskandar CIQ Complex

Johor!!! Johor!!! Johor!!!

THE Johor Indian Business Association has outlined several
key points for the urgent attention of the state government,
in a bid to turn Johor Baru into a commercial and financial hub.

Among other proposals, the association is calling on the state
government to approve the construction of more apartments
and condominiums in the city centre as this would be effective
in drawing out-of-state people to support local business.Association
president P. Sivakumar said there had been a major disruption in
business following the opening of the new Customs, Immigration
and Quarantine complex at the Sultan Iskandar Building."This further
affects the already declining business in the city.

"There is a serious dislocation of business as a result of a shift in traffic
flow in the city centre. At least 50,000 commuters have bypassed the
city centre because of the new CIQ complex. The state government
should do something about this," he said in his New Year message.
Sivakumar said there was also the need to speed up the revival of
abandoned projects, as some of these projects had been abandoned
for more than a decade and were an eyesore. "The state government
needs to waive some of the local council requirements and approvals
so as to expedite the revival." On the Indian community,RM40 billion
had been pledged for Iskandar Malaysia but there had been no assurance
of a blueprint on how the community could contribute towards the
development of the growth region."We do not want to be left out of Iskandar Malaysia," He also pointed out the need for the government to adhere to
the basic principles of competency, accountability and transparency in all development undertakings and project tenders under Iskandar Malaysia.

Police get baby doll In Raid At Golf Resort

Johor!!! Johor!!! Johor!!!

Pontian 11Jan09 ,The police scored a 'hole-in-one' of sorts when they detained 10 China dolls and two Indonesian women working illegally as guest relations officers (GROs) at a golf resort in Pontian, early today.
The foreigners were believed to have been entertaining patrons in a karaoke bistro of the resort, about 180km from here, when they were nabbed by a police team during a raid about 3am.
The GROs, together with 25 patrons, tested positive for the party drug, methaphetamine, and were taken into police custody.
The suspects were aged between 20 and 50.
Pontian police chief Supt Zahaliman Jamin said initial investigations revealed that the women, brought into the country by a syndicate, had violated their visa.
He said the police would investigate whether the syndicate was involved in supplying prostitutes in the district, as well.
It is understood that the police intend to mount more operations to rout the syndicate and curb vice and drug-related activities in the district

All About New Iskandar CIQ Complex

Johor!!! Johor!!! Johor!!!

Bus passengers unhappy with CIQ
JOHOR BAHRU: What was previously a five-minute walk for bus passengers from Singapore to reach the city centre now takes almost 20 minutes from the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex.
Most travellers including senior citizens complained that it took them a long time to get to the city as buses from Singapore no longer entered the city but headed to the Larkin bus terminal. Many also complained about the lack of proper signboards and confusing electronic signs.Singaporean Raja Krishnan, 65, said a 15-minute walk from the checkpoint to the city was too long.“It is good that the complex is equipped with escalators as it will be worse without them. However, it is quite tiring to walk that far especially for an elderly man like me,” he said.He added the authorities should have bus services to the city.Singaporean Tony Goh, 72, said the arrival and departure operations at the new complex was a hassle to go through because of inadequate signages for bus and taxi services.
“Furthermore, the long walks take their toll on me,” he said.
Malaysian Tan Kok Guan, 57, was frustrated that the automatic scanners were not functioning.“I wasted 30 minutes at the counters due to some technical problems. At the old checkpoint, we only needed to show our passports,” he said.On the confusion caused by the cashless toll system at the new complex, Touch ‘n Go public relations officer Harnita Hakimi said she was surprised that this was the case as it had actively advertised since October and promoted the need for the cards. The Touch ‘n Go cards can be purchased at kiosks located along the Johor Baru causeway from 8.30am to 6pm daily and at all Plus expressway counters.According to Johor traffic police chief Supt T. Raveendran, traffic flow inbound remained slow during peak hours.

Causeway traders split over CIQ impact
JOHOR BAHRU: Business owners near the Causeway expressed mixed feelings about the opening of the new Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex. Some were worried they might have to close down because fewer people were entering the city, while others were optimistic that more people would arrive as traffic congestion would ease.Photo studio owner Chin Su Thu was worried business would be so bad that he might be forced to relocate. The 71-year-old said his shop was conveniently located as customers could pick up their photographs on their way back from Singapore.
“Business has been quite bad for the past three to four years, and with the opening of the new CIQ, I’m afraid it will only get worse,” said Chin who has been operating in this location since 1934.He hoped the Johor Baru City Council and state authorities would organise community activities to help draw people to the area.
Salesman Kalai Selvam, who works at a small 24-hour convenience store, said his employer was moving next month.“Business has definitely slowed, but my boss has a lot at the new CIQ and we are moving there,” said the 38-year-old father of two from India.Singaporean Rizal Bashir, 28, a computer programmer, comes to Johor Baru twice a week to refuel his motorcycle. He believes businesses in the vicinity would suffer as a result of the former CIQ closing down.“The new one is simply too far away from here, and it will be very difficult for petrol station owners especially. They will probably need to rely on their regular customers to stay in business,” he said. When approached, petrol station owner Y.K. Chong, 51, said he was not optimistic about the changes.“Profits have dropped by about 20% so far simply because it is no longer convenient for travellers to pass through this way,” he said. For the past month, Chong has been giving out free boxes of tissue paper to motorists in an effort to get them to patronise his station.Security officer M. Saravanan, 21, who lives in Larkin but works in Singapore, said he would not be going to the Causeway area once the new CIQ is fully operational. “It is far from the new exit.”However, hardware shopowner L.K. Chun was optimistic the situation could turn out to be a blessing in disguise for the traders.“There will be far less congestion in the area and this can lure locals to the city.”

Army Sue Three Superior

Johor!!! Johor!!! Johor!!!

JOHOR BAHRU, Jan 1 -- An army private has sued three superior officers seeking RM250,000 for a slander and abuse allegedly committed at the Tanjung Sepang military post in Sungai Rengit, Kota Tinggi, two months ago which left him deformed.Khanafi Umar, 27, of the Royal Malay Regiment's 10th Battalion filed the suit at the Sessions Court Registry here today through lawyer Lt Col (R) Syed Ismail Syed Omar of Messrs Kamal Hisham & Associates. He named his operations officer Major Norazmi Idris, intelligence officer Capt Saiful Adli Ishak and commanding officer Lt Col Adnaan Mahmod as the first, second and third defendants.Khanafi who came from Sarawak said in his statement of claim that the first and second defendants had summoned him to the headquarters of the Tanjung Sepang Post at about 10pm on Nov 3.There, the first and second defendants had confined him to an office and falsely accused him of raping an illegal immigrant and stealing her belongings during an operation on illegal immigrants.Khanafi said the first and second defendants had also uttered a humiliatingly rough phrase which was "Kau ni Babi, manusia jenis apa kau ni" (You're a pig, what kind of man are you).Besides, he said, he had been stripped naked, ants had been placed on his private parts and a bayonet had been pointed at him to force a confession that he did rape the woman and steal her belongings. His refusal to confess made the first and second defendants to beat and abuse him until 5am.Khanafi that he had been hit with a computer chord, kicked all over the body and punched and slapped on the face and body. His head was banged on the wall and hit with a stick, and he was also forced to eat paper, he added. As a result, Khanafi said he sustained cuts and bruises on the body and had his left hand fractured. He had received treatment at Kota Tinggi Hospital and the military hospital in the Majidee camp.During an assembly at the Tanjung Sepang Post's tactical headquarters on Nov 5, he said, the third defendant had falsely accused him and three colleaques of rape and stealing without conducting any investigation. The third defendant had also told him to withdraw the police report he had lodged and had threatened him with a court martial if he refused or he would be dishonourably discharged.Khanafi said his lawyer had served a notice of demand on the defendants on Dec 22 for an apology and compensation for what they had done but they had refused to do so.Meanwhile, he told reporters at the court compound that he was filing the suit on his own conscience and to give a lesson to superior officers."The Malaysian Defence Forces is a grand and respectable organisation. But because of abuse of power by these individuals, they have indirectly tarnished the forces' image," he said.
