Adult Killer ---> Hypertension

Johor!!! Johor!!! Johor!!!
JOHOR BAHRU,-- Adult Malaysians generally are unaware they suffer from hypertension...and the statistics keep rising.Deputy Health Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad revealed that two weeks ago, a random health screening of 100 adults showed that 44 per cent suffered from hypertension and were not undergoing treatment.
He said the percentage merely confirmed what the health ministry knew all along, adding that three years ago, the ministry carried out a mobility survey and found out that 43 per cent of adult Malaysians suffered from hypertension."In a survey in 1996, the figure was 33 per cent. So, it's obvious more and more Malaysians have hypertension."However, the ministry's greatest concern is that many of them are not seeking treatment simply because they are unaware that they have hypertension."It's so easy these days to have your pulse-rate checked. You can do it yourself with the devices available and if you are a married man accompanying your wife for a pre-natal check-up, you can get the doctor to take your BP (blood pressure)," said Dr Latiff.
He was speaking at the launch of the Fitness for Charity programme organised by the Care United Club of Johor Baharu at the City Square here today.Dr Latiff urged non-governmental organisations to play their part to convince the public to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Iskandar Safety and Security blueprint

Johor!!! Johor!!! Johor!!!
JOHOR BAHRU: Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) will launch its safety and security blueprint for Iskandar Malaysia this year. Integrated planning director Suhaili Idrus said such a framework was vital to ensure continuous safety and security in the 2,217-sq km economic growth corridor. He said feedback from existing and potential investors showed that security and safety came second after skilled and trained workforce for them to do business in Iskandar“Our priority is to create a conducive environment for investors and residents to live, work and play in Iskandar and to be least worried about their safety,’’ Suhaili said at the media briefing on the 46 programmes under the safety and security blueprint for Iskandar yesterday.
The programmes are divided into eight thrusts including capacity building, shaping and management of community perceptions, comprehensive preparedness, prevention and deterrence, and rapid response.Suhaili said the programmes would be implemented in the next three to five years while the coordination and integration of operational agencies and stakeholders had already begun and would be completed by year-end.
These include the Johor Mentri Besar’s Office, local authorities, National Security Council, Economic Planning Unit, Civil Defence Department, Royal Malaysian Police, Health Department, Tenaga Nasional Bhd, Syarikat Air Johor, Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency, private sector developers and community organisations.Suhaili said the programmes would cover the whole Iskandar region and a few pilot sites had been identified in Nusajaya.
“Nusajaya has been chosen as the pilot site because of its greenfield status and they (the programmes) can be initiated without having legal impact on land ownership and encroachment on private properties,’’ he said. However, he said sites with brownfield status would not be sidelined under the blueprint but not all of the 46 programmes could be implemented in these sites.
Suhaili said each programme would address a specific safety and security aspect within Iskandar as outlined under its Comprehensive Development Plan from 2006-2025.He said it was vital that stakeholders, planners, investors and residents in Iskandar fully supported and co-operated in the agenda to ensure its success.“The outcome of these initiatives will benefit Iskandar and it is envisaged that the success can be replicated in other parts of the country,’’ he said.

AN international photography competition - Parit Jawa

Johor!!! Johor!!! Johor!!!
State Tourism and Domestic Trade committee chairman Hoo Seong Chang said the competition which started in February, would end in May or June in conjunction with the World Migratory Birds' Day this year.He said Johor Tourism Action Council had allocated RM20,000 to the national photographers' association to organise the competition.
Hoo said this would put Parit Jawa on the world map as one of the tourism destinations in Johor."The competition has encouraged an influx of foreign bird lovers and professional photographers to boost the state tourism industry," he said here recently.
Hoo said these migratory birds created much interest and excitement among bird watchers worldwide. He said some of the birds like Lesser Adjutant stork (leptoptilos javanicus), the Chinese egret (egretta eulophotes) and the Asian Dowitcher (limnodromus semipalmatu) are internationally classified as vulnerable and on the verge of extinction. The birds are found on the 20ha mudflat at Parit Jawa Pantai, about l4km from Muar town.

Singaporean loves to buy house in Johor

Johor!!! Johor!!! Johor!!

JOHOR BAHRU, Buying a residential property in Malaysia, especially here, is still an attractive option for Singaporeans.Property developer, SP Setia Bhd, said this was despite the negative perception about the state capital and the current tough economic conditions the Republic was going through.
Its chief executive officer, Tan Sri Liew Kee Sin, said the company was confident that Singaporeans would continue to invest in the Malaysian property market, both here and in other parts of the country."To date, about 800 Singaporeans have invested in properties built by the company worth an estimated RM300 million," he said at the opening of its office at the Harbour Front in the business district of Singapore today.
Liew said even though the figure represented only only five percent of the company's gross development value, it was encouraging."I think there is a potential to reach 10 per cent mark which is an ideal figure. The cost factor is one big reason why Singaporeans find it attractive to invest here.
"Furthermore, there is the Iskandar project and also the Malaysian goverment's policy on property investment for foreigners," he said.Liew said the office in Singapore would serve existing customers and potential new ones."The office will also help the international community interested to participate in 'Malaysia My Second Home' Programme," he said.

Johor!!! Johor!!! Johor!!!

JOHOR BAHRU, -- Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda) have set up the Iskandar Malaysia-UTM Research Centre (Imrec) to spearhead researches, studies, plannings and creative activities in the southern economic region.Supported by the Higher Education Ministry and Johor government, the centre will become a platform for the university to contribute its expertise and experience in the multi-diversity development in Iskandar Malaysia.
This is highly significant as Iskandar Malaysia is a very big and long term investment that needs the continuous support of expertise, researches and systematic studies. When launching the research centre at Danga Bay here today, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said:"UTM's resources and knowledge in industrial technologies will be invaluable in interpreting data and understanding the various aspects of sustainable development to ensure we are able to formulate workable solutions for implementation in Iskandar Malaysia."
He said the state government had high expectation of Imrec's involvement in all areas as there were a lot of groundwork that needed to be covered in order to achieve the vision of turning Iskandar Malaysia into a metropolis of world standing.Among other things, Imrec would be doing long term researches on environment, water management, energy development and nanotechnology."We have urgent need to proliferate the application of new technologies such as nanotechnology, virtual reality and animation which have the ability to position Iskandar Malaysia at the forefront of international markets and remain competitive into the forseeable future," said Ghani who is also the co-chairman of Irda.
Apart from that, it would channel its assistance in providing training and education programmes that suit and relevant to the needs of the organisations involved in the development of the economic corridor.Present at the function included Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and UTM Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Ir Zaini Ujang.

RM1.7 Billion Investment In Iskandar Malaysia by Khazanah Nasional

Johor!!! Johor!!! Johor!!!
KOTA TINGGI, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman has welcomed the announcement, that Khazanah Nasional will spend RM1.7 billion of the additional RM10 billion investment funds it received under the second economic stimulus package, to implement development projects in Iskandar Malaysia.Abdul Ghani said the injection of funds by Khazanah Nasional would provide confidence for foreign investors to continue with projects in the special economic corridor.
"It (RM1.7 bilion) is important as it gives confidence to foreign investors to continue with their projects in Iskandar Malaysia," he told reporters after presenting land grants to settlers at the Felda Simpang Wa Ha here Thursday.Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced Khazanah Nasional's RM1.7 billion investment in Iskandar Malaysia while tabling the second stimulus package in Parliament on Tuesday.
Abdul Ghani said, at present a number of Khazanah Nasional subsidiaries such as Iskandar Investment Berhad (IIB), were involved in projects in Iskandar Malaysia.According to Abdul Ghani who is also the joint-chairman of the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA), IIB is involved in the preliminary works pertaining to the construction of the Legoland Theme Park worth RM750 million and a university.
IIB is also involved in the building of various infrastructure facility projects in Iskandar Malaysia, he said.Abdul Ghani also disclosed that at the moment, there were 18 infrastructure projects worth RM3 billion being undertaken in Iskandar Malaysia. He said, the injection of the additional funds by Khazanah Nasional was timely and meets the objective of the stimulus package, as Iskandar Malaysia was in the early stages of implementation.

US1.6 billion building in Tanjung Langsat JOHOR

Johor!!! Johor!!! Johor!!!

JOHOR BAHRU, -- Malaysia is set to become one of the largest stainless steel producers in Asia with the construction of a US$1.6 billion (US$1=RM3.69) in the Tanjung Langsat industrial area, Pasir Gudang, here. The plant will be operated by joint-venture company, Bahru Stainless Sdn Bhd, which is owned 67 percent by Spanish company, Acerinox, and 33 percent by Nisshin Steel.
Bahru Stainless managing director, Rafael Garvin Salazar, said the plant would be constructed in three phases and would be fully completed in 2020."It will be the largest and fully-integrated stainless steel plant in the region," he said in an interview with Bernama here today.
Salazar said Malaysia was the only country in Asean (Association of South-East Asian Nations) to have a fully-integrated stainless steel plant."There is no doubt that this is the largest stainless steel plant in Asean."Malaysia will become one of the most important players in stainless steel production," he said.
Acerinox is the largest stainless steel producer in the world and its plant in Tanjung Langsat is the first in Asia. It has two plants in Spain, one in South Africa and two in the US.Salazar said for the first phase, construction of the plant, costing US$320 million, would start next week and was expected to be completed by end-2010.He said the plant would have a production capacity of 240,000 tonnes a year, out of which 182,000 tonnes would be cold-rolled production.
"After the first phase, the company will embark on an expansion programme."When fully completed in 2020, the plant will have the capacity to produce one million tonnes of stainless steel and 800,000 tonnes of cold-rolled production per annum," he said.Salazar said 70 percent of the output would be for export and 30 percent for local use.
He said the plant, when fully completed, would provide 1,600 jobs and generate a multitude of spin-off activities for the local economy.Salazar said the Asean market for stainless steel market was growing and expanding whereas the European market was hit by limited growth."That is why we are here (Malaysia) with an integrated stainless steel plant. Malaysia was picked to house Acerinox's latest plant due to its geographical and strategic location, excellent infrastructure and political stable," he said.He said Malaysia would be Acerinox's gateway to the Asean and Asia stainless steel markets.

Johor Producing 19,000 metric tonnes of RICE

Johor!!! Johor!!! Johor!!!
JOHOR BAHRU, -- Johor will have its own rice bowl as the state government has identified 2,832 hectares of land in Sembrong for the purpose, said Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman. He said at this point the state government is counting on the federal government to put up infrastructure in the area.
"What is needed now is suitable infrastructure and this entails high expenses and we see that this among the pressures on the federal government," he told reporters.
The infrastructure needed was an irrigation and drainage system for planting padi three times a year besides embankments for vehicles and machinery.Abdul Ghani expects padi planting to commence after the infrastructure was ready next year.
The rice bowl is expected to produce at least 19,000 metric tonnes of grain per season.
He hoped smallholders could participate in planting padi through PPNJ and PPK.Abdul Ghani also expressed pleasure on the producing of 60,000 small farmers in the state who had integrated farming activity from planting to processing.
The state government had directed relevant agencies to act in concert to develop various agriculture activities besides oil palm and rubber tree planting on the land of smallholders. This, he said, could further expand the economic activities of the smallholders and raise their income
