Dataran Mahkota, Kota Iskandar Johor

Johor!!! Johor!!! Johor!!!
JOHOR BAHRU: Dataran Mahkota, the state’s administration centre at Kota Iskandar in Nusajaya, is big enough to accommodate up to 50,000 people at any one time.Located between the new Johor State Assembly building and the Mentri Besar’s and state secretary’s complex, the facility is suitable as an assembly area for government staff, functions and even as a spot for relaxation. An official from Cahaya Jauhar Sdn Bhd (the company tasked with building and maintaining the 130ha Kota Iskandar) said that Dataran Mahkota was divided into five components.
He said the components comprised a ceremonial ground, central water plaza, memorial wall, amphitheatre and welcoming moulds.“The ceremonial ground is a fusion of tiles and grass lawns which form a huge geometric shape in the form of a star and a half moon.“We also have a memorial wall detailing the state’s history and glory days,” the official said, adding that this was suitable to promote tourism. He said the open-air amphitheatre, which could sit about 1,800 people, was ideal for entertainment, and cultural and social activities.“At night, the view is spectacular, especially with the lighting, fountain and garden,” the official said, adding that the construction of Kota Iskandar started four years ago. There are three main parks within the complex — Atrium Jauhar, Laman Kasturi and Laman Bunga Rampai. The official said the government buildings were unique as they were built in the concept of a Malay house with traditional roofing.“We have another shaped like an A with aluminium frames outside the building to keep out the glare and heat.“These buildings also have spaciousness and greenery to give government servants some breathing space,” he said.Kota Iskandar also deploys a state-of-the-art garbage disposal systems which involves the fixing of covered pipes within the buildings to channel garbage to a collection area.“Garbage is just put into this vacuum pipeline and carried into a dumpster,” the official said, adding that the buildings were also disabled-friendly.On security, he said that closed-circuit cameras were positioned at strategic spots and people entering the area would go through several checks.
The total development cost of Kota Iskandar is RM1.5bil and it will take several more years to be fully developed.Featuring a combination of Moorish and Andalusian architecture, Kota Iskandar was launched by Johor Sultan Sultan Iskandar Ismail last week.In his speech, Sultan Iskandar commended those involved in the construction and described the centre as a landmark for Johor. He was accompanied by his consort Sultanah Zanariah Tunku Ahmad.Present at the ceremony were the Tunku Mahkota Tunku Ibrahim Ismail and his consort, and Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman.Kota Iskandar will eventually house 76 state and federal agencies and have a total staff strength of more than 6,000.The first batch of more than 1,000 Johor government staff have already moved in.

fresh investments from China, Abu Dhabi and the United States

Johor!!! Johor!!! Johor!!!
MUAR: The Iskandar growth region in Johor Baru is expected to attract fresh investments from China, Abu Dhabi and the United States this year.
Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said he would lead a delegation to the three nations soon to attract the investments.Speaking to reporters here, he said the global economic recession had slowed credit flow to many countries, but he expected the situation to improve by the end of the year.

“We have some agreements to conclude with investors in the three countries and I hope to finalise them when I visit them in the next two months.“We hope, with the new Prime Minister who is a co-chairman of the Iskandar growth region, we can attract fresh interest,” he said after attending a luncheon hosted by Muar Retired Civil Servants Association on Saturday.
Abdul Ghani said, besides Lego Land, two other projects, namely Education City and Medical City, had great potential to attract investment.

He said, with the new Cabinet headed by Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, the investors would have confidence in Iskandar.“There are already signs that the flow of credit has started and we expect the recession to end by early next year,” he added.

Muar The Empress Town

Johor!!! Johor!!! Johor!!!
Today, Muar is the royal town of northern Johor. It was also known as Bandar Maharani (Empress Town), a name given by Sultan Abu Bakar in 1884.It was the only town in Malaysia that had its own rail-link, known as the Muar State Railways, operating just four years after the country's first railway line from Taiping to Port Weld was inaugurated in 1885.
The railway operated from 1889 to 1925, linking Jalan Sulaiman in Muar and Sungai Pulai for 22.5km.There was a plan in 1916 to extend the line to Batu Pahat but the project didn't take off due to financial and geographical constraints. The railway provided a means of transportation for people and produce. However, its prominence dwindled after the opening of Jalan Abdul Rahman, which linked Muar and Parit Jawa, in 1918.
The only relic of the railways today is the display of a MSR locomotive in Taman Tanjung Emas.Another important mode of transportation was the ferry and boats for people on both sides of Sungai Muar, until the Sultan Ismail bridge was built in 1909.Muar is a treasure trove of old buildings. The Muar Royal Customs and Excise Office built in 1909 in Jalan Maharani is an important landmark
The Sultan Ibrahim Jamek Mosque in Jalan Petri has a minaret in its backyard and a signboard with Chinese characters.Another landmark is the Sultan Abu Bakar building (built in 1921), which is a replica of the Istana Besar of Johor Baru, now the Johor Royal Museum. Many shophouses are pre-war buildings with neo-classical facades, and Jalan Meriam has many colonial-styled residential buildings.
Muar today is known for its furniture industry and food. The furniture industry has provided jobs for locals, while the food attracts people from near and far.So the next time you visit Muar, check out the historical buildings to feed your appetite for culture and don't forget the food to satisfy your stomach. Some of the other sites worth visiting are the oddly-named Biawak Busuk (Smelly Monitor Lizard), Kota Buruk (Ruined Fort) and Sungai Mati (Dead River).
